![]() ![]() ![]() This requirement took place because of the law that stated that the county seat couldn’t be located farther than four miles from county center. When an Act of Legislation created Butler County on March 12, 1800, Butler and Allegheny Counties became attached, which made Middlesex one of the original 13 townships. Back then, it was still a part of Allegheny County. Even though it was one of the last to be established, it was one of the first four townships to be officially recognized before 1794. The land transaction was a part of the Treaty of Fort Stanwix. Middlesex Township in Butler County lies entirely inside the old “Last Purchase of 1784” and is the second to last piece of land purchased from the Native Americans.
